Market Overview
In the first half of 2026, the natural fatty alcohol market showed a range-bound pattern driven by costs but weighed by soft demand. High and volatile prices of upstream feedstocks such as palm oil and coconut oil kept production costs well supported, slowly lifting mainstream offer levels; meanwhile, home care buyers stayed cautious in the off-season, with transactions dominated by small necessity-driven orders.
Cost Side: Oils Trading High
Palm oil, the primary feedstock for natural fatty alcohols, directly sets the cost floor. In H1, Southeast Asian producing regions entered their production upcycle, yet biodiesel demand diverted significant volumes, keeping oils at relatively high levels. Fatty alcohol producers could hardly reduce costs and showed strong price-support intentions.
Demand Side: Cautious Off-Season Buying
Downstream surfactant and detergent plants ran at steady operating rates but showed limited acceptance of high-priced feedstocks, mostly buying on a need-to basis and keeping inventories low. Intense competition in SLES and APG products hindered cost pass-through, further capping demand release for fatty alcohols.
Outlook & Procurement Advice
Looking into Q3, as the traditional September-October peak season approaches, restocking demand from home care should recover, giving fatty alcohol prices some upward potential. Buyers are advised to: first, watch for forward price-locking opportunities and build positions in batches within the trading range; second, stay in close communication with suppliers and prioritize grades with stable supply (such as mainstream C12 and C16); third, monitor palm oil price inflection points and adjust procurement pace accordingly.
